Aaaaarrrrgh!

Disaster!

On milling the last "hole" on hub #2, I missed securing the slides:

It was even the last suitable piece of metal.

When time has healed the wounds, I will just have to start over.

Cheers,

Meanwhile, I have been experimenting with volume control. At the IPMS 08 Open (the "08" refers to our local area code...), it was discovered that the rather high volume, I thought  , got lost in the general noise in the hall. Since I have dials on the radio, I wanted to use one to control the volume.

Naturally, a solid state solution was preferred, but googling on the matter turned up very little. I did find one circuit that could possibly have been tweaked into something, but it required more work. Here are my experiments:
Image
The circuit is a simple, general purpose PWM to analog converter. However, its filtering was insufficient and the PWM pulses generated awful noise and eventually I gave up after weeks of trying. It appears that quality sound amplification is a matter for people who know what they are doing...

I had to resort to a Flintstones solution:
Image
A potentiometer on a servo. Secured with a cable tie... Ugly, I know, but it works. Besides, I will hide it in the radio box, so as long as you can keep a secret - nobody will ever know.

I can now adjust the volume from the radio, ranging from indoor comfortable to downright painful. Let's see how that works out in an open field!

Thanks for following my whacky ways,
/Chris

It took quite some time, but now I have made...

...a hub cap! :D

A grease fitting remains to be made, but that will be later. First, there are more compelling details to be made.

Hi Chris,

Echo Tim here, you nailed that one good.
Looks the part!

Admit it is a nice feeling when you look at a part made by your own sweat and tears.
Making it twice because the first one failed makes the feeling even better.
The only thing is that it takes ages to finish a tank... just ask me...

Glad there nowadays are skilled people like Tim, Steve and others that gives us the choice to cut corners.
Offering stunning looking parts we only dreamed about just a few years ago.
For me the mixture of buy aftermarket / make my own when my own limited skills/tools allows is perfect.

Kind regards
Kent

Thanks! You guys make me blush...

Kent: Yep, nice feeling afterwards. There was no blood, but definitely sweat and tears (I ruined two hubs before succeeding...). It should not have to be so much work - I blame my toy lathe...

Falckner: It appears that you do have very good skills! :D

I have also been experimenting with fans to get more thrust in the exhaust. First, an upgraded axial fan, as powerful as will fit the smoker:
http://s980.photobucket.com/albums/ae29 ... i_5108.mp4
Not quite cascades of smoke toward the sky.

I also have a really big radial fan that I have no hope of fitting inside the Tiger, but wanted to try anyway:
http://s980.photobucket.com/albums/ae29 ... i_5108.mp4
Airflow (or should I say smokeflow?) reaches much higher, but is so diluted that it is hard to see. Also, note how long the fan is turning after the engine is turned off - definitely a drawback that comes with size...
I have two more smoke elements on order that could be used to enhance the full throttle smoke density.

What do you think?

Thanks for checking in,
/Chris

Gee, that was the wrong answer - how on earth am I going to fit that gigantic fan?

Like black? I understand that people have tried, but it does not tint the smoke and only accumulates in the smoke elements, so unfortunately - no.

Thanks for taking the time,
/Chris
