Hi Bjorn
Thanks. I usually used Mr Surfacer 500 stippled on with a stiff bristled brush for light texturing. You can go over and over it again as needed until you achieve your desired affect. For a heavier "cast" texture, I will use whats known over hear as a glazing putty or "spot putty". It's a red, premixed putty in a tube used for finishing body work after a standard auto body filler has been used. You cana also thin down regular body filler and use that.
Some progress made on the cupola. This is one of Mike Stannard's fantastic cupolas. Decided to keep it an earlier cupola without drainage slots just to be different but I will add the smaller details to the exterior including the hatch stop and interior head pad. This will all be weathered later on.
the basic assembly with first coat of paint

Periscope housings next.
Kind regards
Tim

Hi Chris...Thanks. I just hate having to cut metal.
More progress. Installed the traverse and elevation brackets and motors and tested them. All works very well. The limit switches are connected but not necessary with the way its controlled so they are not mounted at the moment.

Have some thoughts on detailing the turrets interior walls but well see.
more soon

Thanks Bjorn
I was thinking of suggesting this mechanism for your Panzer IV but it looks like you have it all sorted out.
Some minor progress on the turret hatches. Some more texturing will be added to the roof and cupola before final color.
Commander's Cuopla

Loader's Hatch

Remaining turret welds, mantle and main gun barrel detail next.

Hi friends
Well, after thinking about it too much, I decided to just jump in and do it. Turret zimmerit is applied and I think it looks just OK. Not what I was hoping for. The vision ports will receive their zimmerit and then when positioned, I'll blend them in as best I can. Same with the welds around the lifting lugs.
This was a huge step forward on this model.
Now onto smaller things like the mantle and gun detailing, spare track links etc..

Hi everyone
After trying to convince myself that the first attempt was good enough, I couldn't stand it anymore and decided it needed to be redone to get a look that I was after. It does not have overlapping rake marks but after studying wartime photos until I couldn't see straight, I decide I like the bigger pattern rather then the messy, overlapping one. (just my own opinion and preference).
So, after I pt the kids to bed last night I headed out to the shop for the messiest of jobs. Chisling off and sanding all the zimmerit that was applied yesterday. I can say that this material is tougher then I thought.
Once the turret and hatch and vision ports were ready, I set out on the new technique. Completed and I was in bed at 1:30am much happier with the new results.
To achieve the look, I first applied the material similar to the hul but using a standard comb-trowel with the right scale teeth. Once the turret was covered and everything looked OK, hi used a hair dryer to speed up the drying working around the turret. While applying heat, and when the material was partially set up, I smashed down each ridge individually with a flat spreading spatula. By the last few sections, I really had the hang of it. I.m much happier with this look.
and can now move on knowing the turret zimmerit is right.
The barrel will be detailed and the muzzle brake replaced.

Hi Chris
I'm glad you didnt have to go through that either!
Here is a color rendering I did of sort of what I'm after. Camo pattern not exact but overall look. May even try some subtle battle damage on this one. Thanks to Kent for his help confirming tactical number colors for this unit.

Kind regards

Hi Tim
I like you´r second edition turret zimmerit
seems to be a little more "life" in it.
(Not sure if this is how you say it in english) :?
