Positioned most of the forward deck tool brackets I'll do the starter handle, wire cutters and strap for the jack block later today along with adding all the welds. These are all Mike Stannard parts and well worth the price in my opinion. The front vent will be modified slightly before installation. Decided to keep the center weld subtle. Rear deck grills are temporarily in position so I can think about what needs to be done there as the next step.
Sat down yesterday and for a change of pace, started pulling turret parts out. One thing led to another and I ended up with an assembled turret. It went together easily and fit of the roof deck seems to be OK. Now Ican start looking at it and deciding what to do. Neat to see the Tiger armed with it's 88 finally. I know the Tiger 1 is old news for most everyone here but for me, it's all new.
With the Panzer IV sitting behind it and the Panther behind that, it is amazing how ominous the Tiger looks even up and the stand with no tracks and the turret in bare metal. I'm looking forward to experimenting with the different zimmerit pattern that will be on this turret.
With the turret in front of me, I started detailing the cupola and it's parts. one of which is the periscope prism housings. Wanted to give them the same bakelite finish I did on the Panther. This led me to the Driver and Radio hatches prism housings as well.
Driver and Radio Operator prism housings
The hatch interiors will be painted and weathered later on. I'll post the cupola as it's own series of photos when completed.
Yes, the prisms are the glass version. I never thought I needed to have them for my model but bought them along with some other parts from someone who didn't need them at a reasonable price. They are actually functional and that's pretty amazing. Mike Stannard did a nice job with these.
Thank you for the nice comment on the housing finish.
Been awhile but some progress made yesterday and today on the rear deck and some other small things before I start on the turret. Motor mounts are on their way from Armortek so I hope to have it rolling under its own power soon.
Initial assembly of the intake and exhaust vents
Jaw dropping work as always
Outstanding is an understatement.
Just add the cover for the engine heater port at the rear plate and you can leave the hull as it is perfect.
Thanks for the picture and input. I originally intended to make the armor cover but at the moment, I need to work with what I have and will be cutting a few more corners on the Tiger 1 then I had originally planned to. For example, using the existing deck grills.
Will likely circle back around and add the cover and some other details prior to camo and weathering stage.
There are lots of nice details to notice, if given a little time.. One I noticed just now is the MG ball mount. Did you make any particular changes to it, by chance - besides the rounded corners? Yours looks like the ball is buried deeper in the mount than mine - more like the prototype? If so, how did you do that?
After a bit of a stall with the Tiger project(mostly due to "real work") I finally added a few of the deck welds and had a chance to get it lower to the ground and ready to test drive it under it's own power. Having trouble with my video camera at the moment so for now photos will have to do. it runs very smoothly. No adjustment has been done to the track tension as I will do this once it's on the ground.
Hope to take it for a spin later today or tomorrow.
